Through many years as music teachers at ECEC education we have experienced that students and ECEC institution staff feel uncomfortable singing when fellow students are listening. In this research project we have examined ECEC teachers’ relationship to singing, and based on that we discuss how we can develop music pedagogical practices in ECEC teacher training that contribute to ECEC teachers singing more in ECEC institutions. The data for the study are two group interviews and one individual in-depth interview. Through a thematic abductive analysis, we have identified the following themes as central for the ECEC teachers, and thus also for the ECEC teacher training: musical competence; identification; expectations of one’s own singing performance; singing in formal and informal situations; humor, nonsense and silly songs. The discussion links empirical and theoretical perspectives, and in conclusion we highlight the implications the study may have for music practices in ECEC teacher education.
