Furuset, K. (2017). Hva betyr plantenavnet turt?. Blyttia: Norsk botanisk forenings tidsskrift. 75(2), 217–219.
Abstract
Alpine sow-thistle Cicerbita alpina (syn. Lactuca alpina) is an alpine and boreal Asteraceae and a close relative of lettuce Lectuca sativa. In Norway and Sweden, it has been collected and used as a supplementary food resource for centuries. However, it tastes bitter, and except as a culinary dainty in spring, it has mostly been used during famines and because of poverty. In Norwegian and Swedish, it is called «turt» or «torta», which may be interpreted to mean «plant for poor and indigent people».
